The Lost Love Diaries
Documentary
Director: Yasmine Novak
Duration: 53 mins
Language: Hebrew, English & Dutch
Country: Israel

Bernie and Ellis were lovers in Amsterdam during the Second World War. As they went into hiding, on the night of their parting, they promised to keep a diary. That was the last time Ellis saw Bernie.

Ellis survived the Holocaust and moved to Israel where she married Elmie. But on the day of her wedding, a package arrived. It was Bernie’s diary. Overwhelmed by the turn of events, she pushed the diary out of her mind – and for 65 years it remained untouched.

Now, after the death of Elmie and 60 years of marriage, daughter Shula persuades her mother to open the diary. And together, they go on a journey to Holland to discover the fate of Ellis’ first love.

The Lost Love Diaries is not your usual Holocaust documentary. A story-teller full of joy, charm and optimism, Ellis goes in search of unfulfilled love and a man who, for her, will always be remembered. And whilst deeply moving, her journey is one of love and told with humour, in honour of Bernie’s memory.
